Director James Cameron has long envisioned the "Avatar" saga extending to at least five films, with potential plans for six or even seven installments. However, this extensive roadmap doesn't mean there aren't interim conclusions. In a recent interview with io9, Cameron revealed that the upcoming third film, "Avatar: Fire and Ash," serves as the climax for the first three films' storyline, effectively concluding a trilogy.

Cameron explained that he believes the interviewer understands sequels and the need to constantly exceed audience expectations, delivering fresh experiences each time. He clarified, "I don't view 'Fire and Ash' as just a sequel; I see it as the culmination of the entire saga. I prefer the term 'series' over 'sequel' because many of our story arcs build upon the existing framework. So, it makes more sense to consider it the third act of one overarching story."

Cameron continued, urging audiences not to perceive it as a typical Hollywood sequel, "the kind where they make a ton of money on one film and then think, 'Oh no, we need to quickly cobble together a new script. It might not be great, but let's just shoot it and release it.' That's not our approach at all. This is a long game. I knew from the start we were in it for the long haul, and I believe audiences will invest in and care about these characters—who may be ten feet tall and blue-skinned, but they are fundamentally human."
Cameron concluded by teasing future installments: "The fourth and fifth films will be a self-contained series, with another distinct beginning, middle, and end spanning those two installments. But for now, that's just theoretical."
