This was the first transformable Mobile Armor (MA) capable of self-sustained atmospheric flight. Its development was carried out by the Augusta Research Lab, one of the Newtype Labs. The "N" in its model number stands for Newtype Lab.
At the time, Sub-Flight Systems (SFS) for Mobile Suits (MS) such as the Base Jabber and Dodai Kai had already been developed, but these systems consumed carrier space, and if the SFS was shot down, the MS's combat and deployment capabilities would significantly decrease. Furthermore, SFS had poor ascent performance, making them unsuitable as interceptors, which led to the creation of this unit. By transforming its upper body into a disc-shaped lifting body and utilizing the powerful propulsion mechanism generated by its transforming legs, this unit achieved maneuverability comparable to a fighter jet and superior ascent capabilities. Magnetic coating was applied to the transforming parts and all movable sections, allowing for a transformation time of just 0.5 seconds. This enabled it to infiltrate in MA mode, instantly transform into MS mode for close-quarters combat during freefall, and then quickly transform back into MA mode for rapid disengagement, demonstrating a combat style unachievable by traditional MS. The unit's color scheme features a dark yellow upper body, a dark green lower body, and red accents around the mono-eye and other areas.
Development began in Universal Century 0083. The transformation mechanism was relatively simple, primarily enhancing the freedom of movement of the joints in MS mode, resulting in fewer issues. In 0085, the prototype was completed and rolled out mid-year, with operational testing commencing by test units. It is said that after civilians witnessed the unit during testing, they reported seeing "UFOs" to the Federation Forces and police authorities. Due to its high mass-producibility and excellent performance as an MS, this unit was deemed capable of replenishing the forces lost during the One Year War and was thus officially adopted. In the early stages of mass production, this unit was only deployed to units in North America, gradually being distributed to various Federation Forces bases. Although the unit possessed high durability and bullet resistance, its chest armor, which expanded during transformation, became its weakness. Furthermore, due to its armament consisting of only one beam rifle, its firepower was insufficient, leading to the development of the new unit, the Gabthley.
The Asshimar is the first product in the ROBOT SPIRITS series to feature a transformation mechanism. Based on its in-show design, it boasts a substantial 16 cm height and a refined yet robust curved armor design. It can transform into Mobile Suit mode, Mobile Armor mode, and a pre-flight stance with its legs bent in a reverse joint configuration, all without needing to swap parts.
The overall transformation is solid. Additionally, the robot mode has decent articulation, and its appearance is very eye-catching! Most parts are directly molded from plastic, so QC is generally not an issue! The joints are firm, though long-term play cannot be guaranteed. The price isn't cheap, but the quality is definitely worth it!
If I say this is one of D.M.S.'s Top 10 Best Buys of 2025, will I get beaten up...?
