Fan backlash to the "Star Wars" franchise is nothing new, but director Rian Johnson's "Star Wars: The Last Jedi," the eighth installment from the "Knives Out" filmmaker, arguably remains the most polarizing entry. While the film elicited extreme reactions, with fans either loving or hating it, Johnson stands by his creative choices.

Speaking to Polygon recently, Johnson explained, "I've been a 'Star Wars' fan since I was a kid, so I know how fans react and resist when something challenges the established norms of 'Star Wars.' I understand there will inevitably be internal strife within the 'Star Wars' world, but I also know that the gravest sin is to be overly cautious, to fear doing anything that might shake up the 'Star Wars' world. Because ever since 'The Empire Strikes Back,' every 'Star Wars' film has shaken the franchise's foundations, unsettling fans, sparking anger, debate, and intense discussion. But ultimately, for many, those challenges made them fall in love with 'Star Wars' and embrace those changes."
