Despite James Cameron's return as executive producer, "Terminator: Dark Fate" became the lowest-grossing film in the franchise after its release a few years ago, leading to the cancellation of the planned new trilogy. However, this hasn't entirely extinguished Cameron's passion for developing the series further. As early as 2022, he announced plans to develop a seventh installment, vowing that the seventh film would move away from action-heavy sequences.
While Cameron remains committed to continuing the franchise, both Arnold Schwarzenegger, who famously portrayed the T-800, and Linda Hamilton, known for her role as Sarah Connor, have publicly stated they would not return. This necessitates a new cast to take over the lead roles in the next chapter.

Cameron has seemingly accepted Hamilton and Schwarzenegger's public refusals. In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter (THR), he admitted that Schwarzenegger will not be invited back for the seventh installment. "I can say for sure he won't be in it," Cameron stated. "It's time to move on to a new generation of characters. I was insistent that Arnold be in 'Dark Fate,' and that film provided a fitting conclusion to his T-800 character. We need a broader interpretation of the Terminator concept, the time war, and super-intelligent AI. I want to try something that people haven't imagined."

Given Cameron's past work on "Aliens," The Hollywood Reporter also asked for his thoughts on the upcoming "Alien" TV series, which delves deeper into AI themes. He initially praised it as "good-looking" and "interesting," but then offered some critique regarding its nostalgic homage elements. "I wouldn't do fan-service callbacks in the 'Terminator' series," he explained. "I'm not criticizing, but 'Aliens' was my film, and that was 41 years ago, right? That kind of thing doesn't appeal to me."
