“Clair Obscur: Expedition 33” Addresses Generative AI Controversy, States Human-Made Content, Still Stripped of “Game of the Year” Award

The role-playing game "Clair Obscur: Expedition 33" recently found itself embroiled in a generative AI controversy, leading the Indie Game Awards to revoke its previously bestowed "Game of the Year" and "Best Debut Game" accolades for 2025. This development has once again put the production team in the spotlight.

In response, developer Sandfall Entertainment issued a public statement addressing external concerns about the game's use of generative AI. The studio emphasized that all content in the final version was created by human artists, and any AI-generated assets were only briefly used as placeholders during the initial development phase, subsequently being completely deleted once identified.

This clarification emerged from a Q&A event hosted by Kepler Interactive for the Creator Collective. According to YouTuber Sushi, who attended and relayed the details, Game Director Guillaume Broche stated directly that the team was already deep into development when generative AI gained traction in 2022. They experimented with AI as a temporary tool to fill in unfinished textures, but after practical use, it "didn't feel right." The quality and creative vision were deemed unacceptable, prompting a swift decision to remove all such elements. Broche specifically highlighted that core content, including concept art and voice acting, never utilized AI generation.

However, despite the removal and rectification of these materials well before the official release, "Clair Obscur: Expedition 33" was still disqualified from the Indie Game Awards due to its past use of generative AI. The organizers explained that the revocation stemmed from the confirmed fact of AI usage during the development process, which was not entirely consistent with previous public statements.

Regarding the team's future stance, Guillaume Broche acknowledged the unpredictable direction of the industry but affirmed Sandfall Entertainment's clear commitment: future projects will continue to adhere to the principle of "human creation," eschewing generative AI.

While the award revocation has sparked debate, "Clair Obscur: Expedition 33" has still achieved notable success among players, and the discussions surrounding it continue to fuel the ongoing debate about whether AI should be involved in game creation.
