Two weeks after its release, "Avatar: The Way of Water" is nearing the $800 million mark globally. Given the strong, sustained box office performance of the previous installments, reaching Disney's desired commercial benchmarks should be achievable, ensuring that the planned fourth and fifth films can proceed as scheduled. However, director James Cameron recently admitted that he still has a contingency plan in place should the fourth and fifth installments not come to fruition.

"I don't know if it's going to go on or not," Cameron told Entertainment Weekly this month, "but I hope it does. And you know, we've proven the business case every time we've done it. So, my plan is, if for some reason we don't make 'Avatar 4' and 'Avatar 5,' I'm going to hold a press conference and tell everybody what the plan was. How about that?"
Beyond a press conference, Cameron's other contingency involves publishing a book. "These characters have such a rich culture, backstory, and detail, and they've all been meticulously crafted," he explained. "I'd love to do something with this incredibly rich material, but this publishing model doesn't work anymore; people don't read books. But regardless, preserving an authoritative record of how the series was originally intended to unfold might be a good idea."
