DCU's "Supergirl" Reportedly Adopts Lower Budget; James Gunn Debunks Wonder Woman Casting Rumors

DC Studios has been actively reshaping its cinematic universe in recent years, gradually implementing a production strategy that embraces projects of varying scales. Following the unveiling of plans for high-budget tentpoles like "Superman" and more style-driven, mid-to-small scale features, the latest reports indicate that the upcoming "Supergirl" film will adopt a relatively lower-budget production approach, sparking widespread discussion among fans and industry insiders.

According to international reports, "Supergirl"'s production budget falls into the lower range for DCU films. This move is seen as a pragmatic choice to increase profit flexibility and mitigate box office risks. While beneficial for studios in terms of financial control, it has also led some fans to note that this adaptation of the comic "Woman of Tomorrow" clearly deviates from the traditional superhero blockbuster approach in terms of visual scale and casting strategy.

Based on currently available information, the film does not heavily feature A-list stars. Even the most recognizable actor, Jason Momoa, will only make a brief cameo as Lobo. The lead role of Kara Zor-El is played by Milly Alcock, known for her breakout role in "House of the Dragon." The overall casting indicates DC Studios' preference for a character and story-centric approach, rather than relying on star power.

Separately, James Gunn recently became a focal point due to Wonder Woman casting rumors. Addressing widespread speculation on the social media platform Threads that the DCU's Diana (Wonder Woman) would be announced in early 2026—with some reports linking it to a rumored 2027 "Man of Tomorrow" project—he personally debunked the claims, briefly stating that the reports were untrue and effectively pumping the brakes on overheated market expectations.

"Supergirl" is directed by Craig Gillespie, known for "Cruella," with a screenplay penned by DC Universe's go-to writer, Ana Nogueira. The film is slated for a global release on June 26, 2026.
