With the highly anticipated release of "Stranger Things" Season 5 finale, the Hawkins adventure that captivated audiences for a decade has officially concluded. Natalia Dyer, who portrays Nancy Wheeler, recently sat down with Deadline for an exclusive interview, opening up for the first time about the creative process behind her character's ending and how she actively influenced Nancy's future trajectory.
Dyer reflected on Nancy's significant evolution, noting that in the final season, she transformed from the cautious, introverted high schooler seen in Season 1 into an assertive individual capable of acting as bait and confronting Vecna head-on. Describing the filming experience for the finale, Dyer stated, "Some parts truly felt like an action movie, a complete departure from the Season 1 vibe. It was a rare experience to grow with the character and navigate increasingly massive situations."
Addressing the global audience finally witnessing the series finale, Dyer admitted to complex emotions. "It all feels pretty surreal," she shared. "I'm so glad we don't have to keep these things a secret anymore, but at the same time, it's incredibly bittersweet because it truly feels like a real goodbye."
In the final chapter, Nancy and Jonathan officially part ways, and the ending reveals her decision to leave school and pursue a career in journalism. Dyer was candid, stating she was "very adamant" about this particular narrative choice.
"I really couldn't imagine Nancy going back to school, writing papers, and doing homework. I was very clear with the Duffer Brothers, saying, 'Please, I really can't see that.' To me, that wasn't the path she would take." Dyer added that when she saw the final version of the ending, only one thought came to mind: "Yes, that's Nancy."
Discussing the emotionally charged breakup scene, Dyer described it as a performance she deeply cherished. "Because the plot moves so quickly, many character relationships rarely get enough time to truly unfold. That moment allowed the audience to see the love and weight that still existed between them," she explained. "When you think you might die, honesty becomes incredibly important, and that was the most fitting way to conclude that relationship."
Reflecting on a decade of filming, Dyer likened "Stranger Things" to a recurring summer camp. "It's incredibly rare to have such a stable and long-running project so early in your career," she expressed emotionally. "We are all very aware that this didn't come easily, and we are incredibly grateful to the audience."
As the gates to the Upside Down close and the story of Hawkins concludes, for Dyer, it feels more like a new beginning. She concluded, "This is the end of one chapter, but also the start of another journey. We'll slowly process it and look forward to what comes next."
