Netflix's hit series "Stranger Things" officially concluded this month, and the ultimate fate of its protagonist, Eleven, remains a hot topic of discussion among viewers. Series creators Matt and Ross Duffer recently confirmed in multiple interviews that Millie Bobby Brown, who plays Eleven, knew the character's ending long ago but was strictly ordered to keep it a secret from everyone.
Speaking on the "Happy Sad Confused" podcast, Matt Duffer revealed that Millie had "sworn not to tell," and that even her co-stars had no idea if Eleven lived or died.
During the podcast recording, the Duffer Brothers even texted her on the spot to remind her not to reveal any clues to Noah Schnapp, who plays Will. Millie briefly replied, "Of course not," demonstrating remarkable self-control.
The Duffer Brothers emphasized that this secrecy was not a gimmick but an integral part of the ending's design. Matt noted in an interview with "The Hollywood Reporter" that neither the characters nor the audience should be given a definitive answer; otherwise, Eleven's sacrifice would lose its meaning.
Matt stated that "not knowing has its own value." He also observed that, based on social media reactions, most viewers chose to believe Mike's perspective, leaning towards a gentler conclusion.
Ross Duffer added on Netflix's official platform, "Netflix Tudum," that Eleven symbolizes the magic and purity of childhood, and the story needed to teach both characters and viewers to let go. He explained that even if the truth isn't revealed, the characters still choose to believe in the possibility of happiness. This, he concluded, is the growth and farewell "Stranger Things" aims to convey: the journey from childhood to adulthood, moving forward with faith.
