Whenever new promotional material for "Cyberpunk 2077" drops, the community often questions whether the male version of V is being deliberately phased out by the developers. While Male V was the primary face of the game during its initial launch, since 2023, Female V has predominantly taken on the protagonist's image in posters, trailers, and cross-promotions, leading to some player dissatisfaction.

Addressing these concerns, CD Projekt Red Creative Director Igor Sarzynski recently clarified that the marketing strategy has indeed been consciously adjusted. However, he emphasized that this isn't about "erasing Male V" but rather the team's desire to give both protagonist options fair representation.
Sarzynski offered this explanation on Bluesky in response to a fan's query about Male V's absence from recent promotions and collaborations. He stated that Male V "had whole base game marketing for himself," so for the "Phantom Liberty" expansion, the team "decided to switch it up. One game for each V."
Sarzynski also acknowledged that Female V became the series' public face during a period when the game's quality and reputation significantly improved, which likely contributed to her leaving a more distinct impression on players. This includes the previous collaboration with "Fortnite," which featured Female V.

However, Sarzynski added that even without the "one game, one V" strategy, the team had already leaned towards selecting a female character for that particular "Fortnite" collaboration to appear alongside Johnny Silverhand.
In many games with customizable genders, male characters often remain the primary official representatives. "Cyberpunk 2077"'s later marketing shift to feature its female protagonist is considered a relatively uncommon approach. Some players believe this arrangement has allowed Female V to gain the spotlight she deserves in the latter half of the series' lifespan.
