The 1/144 scale Gunpla "HG (High Grade)" series, known for its most diverse range of mobile suits and produced by the HOBBY Division of Japan's BANDAI SPIRITS Co., Ltd., has officially announced the latest product from the theatrical anime film "Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM": the "HG 1/144 Strike Freedom Gundam Type II & Wings of Light Effect Set," scheduled for release in March 2026. This product will only be sold exclusively on Bandai's official online store, PREMIUM BANDAI.
The ZGMF/A-262B Strike Freedom Gundam Type II is the mobile suit piloted by protagonist Kira Yamato. It is a new mobile suit improved with Orb's latest technology, developed half a year before the main story of "FREEDOM," after the "Strike Freedom Gundam" was shot down following an unsuccessful terrorist attempt to hijack it. Although there aren't significant changes to its external appearance, in reality, all its armaments, except for the High-Energy Beam Rifle, have been updated. It also secretly houses a powerful ultimate weapon, the "Convergent Heavy-Nucleus Beam Cannon," in its forehead. However, due to its excessive destructive power and high energy consumption, among other reasons, it cannot be used in this form.
Modified from the previously released "HG 1/144 Mighty Strike Freedom Gundam" kit, it uses some new parts to recreate its appearance in the show, equipped with the "Super DRAGOON" mobile weapon wings. It features the "SEED Action System" which allows for classic poses from the Gundam SEED series. With flexible joint designs such as double joints in the forearms and independently swinging hip joints for the legs, it can be posed in cool battle stances from the show. However, the "Super DRAGOON" mobile weapon wing parts used are completely reused from the "HGCE 1/144 Strike Freedom Gundam" released in 2016. Although it features deployable articulation and a mechanism to detach 8 beam assault cannons, it still suffers from issues like overly thick parts and a lack of sharpness.
The armaments include a set of "Beam Shield" effects, two "High-Energy Beam Rifles," and two "Beam Sabers," all identical to those of the Mighty Strike Freedom Gundam. All weapons can recreate their connected forms. The new live-ammunition weapon from the theatrical version, the "Prototype Type 35 Railgun," is also included with two units. New weapon pegs and connection parts have been created, allowing the railguns to be mounted on the "Calius 3" railguns on both sides of the waist or on the rear skirt armor.
The gorgeous Wings of Light effect parts are made with completely new molds, using polarized molding material to express the characteristic gradient glow seen in the show. The color changes with the viewing angle, creating a dynamic effect of flowing light. The accessories also include 8 sets of connection parts for launching the "Beam Assault Cannons." However, the display stand only includes "ACTION BASE 7" for the main body. To display the "Beam Assault Cannons" in their firing state, a separately sold "Weapon Display Base 01" or an auxiliary stand of the same specification is required.
