Dragon Quest VII Reimagined Demo: First Reviews Are In – Flop or Masterpiece Confirmed? Incredibly Smooth Controls!

Following the midnight release of the "Early Access Demo" for Dragon Quest VII Reimagined (DQ7R) on January 7, 2026, a massive wave of discussion immediately erupted on X (formerly Twitter) in Japan! By the 9th, official posts garnered over ten thousand likes and thousands of retweets, leading to thousands of player impressions surfacing daily. Positive reviews are overwhelmingly dominant: The "graphics style" is described as delicate and warm, like an exquisite "miniature model"; the battle "tempo" is incredibly fast and refreshing (with the new "Burst Charge" system receiving particular acclaim); controls have been fully modernized, significantly enhancing comfort; coupled with the lively performances from the full voice acting cast, both new and veteran fans are eagerly anticipating the release date!

Even Yuji Horii, the father of the series, personally tweeted, calling the game a "birthday gift" to fans, further elevating expectations. However, some veteran fans quietly grumbled about needing to get used to UI changes, oversimplified tablet mechanics, and a more approachable early-game difficulty, expressing concern about the extent of the "Reimagined" elements in the latter half. Nevertheless, the "visually stunning" graphics style has been described as an exquisite "puppet show" or "miniature model," offering both a heartwarming and tangible feel; and the system evolution, which inherits the battle advantages of the 3DS version combined with the movement feel of the PlayStation, along with the highly praised system allowing players to directly defeat monsters on the map once powered up, has been widely acclaimed.

Dragon Quest VII Reimagined Demo

Since I still couldn't decide whether to play on PS5 or Switch, I decided to check the differences between the consoles.

The result was... "Absolutely no difference!!"

So, I'm still troubled by the lack of a decisive factor, but since I also have a PS Portal, and I'm used to "X button confirmation" & can record long gameplay videos, I ultimately decided to go with the PS5 version~

While the Dragon Quest VII Reimagined demo already surprised me when the original was released on the first PlayStation (PS1) 26 years ago, the extent of its evolution this time is truly astonishing~

Although I gave up halfway through the original PS version (frustration)... because this version has become so smooth and comfortable, I might actually be able to finish it this time.
*I'm currently playing with the background music (BGM) turned off.

Impressions of playing DQ7

.Regarding the prologue: The scene where Kiefer eats "seeds (stat-boosting seeds)" there must be intentional.

.Movement inherits from the original PS version, while battles follow the 3DS version, all complemented by a heartwarming graphics style and luxurious background music (BGM). The overall spec upgrade is very noticeable and feels great.

.What I'm more concerned about (and find regrettable) is that the familiar "dialogue boxes and command windows," which have been used since the early days of the series, have been abolished (revised). It feels a bit lonely.

I finished the Dragon Quest VII Reimagined demo!

The doll-like graphics are incredibly detailed, with a beautiful texture that makes it feel like you're truly running through a miniature world, and it's very cute.

Although it's a retro overhead perspective, you can still feel the world's tangible presence and enjoy exploring the map.

The pacing of the story and battles has also been adjusted in various stress-free ways for modern players, making it very easy to pick up and play.

Dragon Quest VII Reimagined is too good... truly too good... Isn't this a miniature model filmed in real life?! It's so beautiful it makes you wonder, and the map scenes are full of warmth. This is a novel sensation I've never experienced before. After just 30 minutes of playing, it's already confirmed to be a masterpiece!!!!

(This veteran Square Enix fan also posted another update... about getting a Dragon Quest meal at McDonald's...)
I'm so engrossed that I'm playing Dragon Quest VII Reimagined while eating a "Dragon Quest Burger Meal" at McDonald's.

DQ7 demo, battles are super comfortable lol. It's hard to plan strategy when you don't know who acts next. Playing on high difficulty, grinding levels while Matilda is around lol.

VTuber Suou Patra: The Dragon Quest VII Reimagined demo is so much fun—! The satisfaction is so high it makes you wonder, "Can they really let us play this deeply?!" And there are quite a few story branches, each one making me curious! The first event also made me feel "Ah~~~ (heart-wrenching/shocking)," I really want to get to the next island quickly! Super excited for the release date!! Thank you everyone for watching the stream~!

I immediately downloaded the Dragon Quest VII demo. Personally, I prefer this style over HD-2D~. There's an excitement like personally controlling a puppet show.

In summary, the current evaluation of the "Dragon Quest VII Reimagined Demo" is: "A confirmed masterpiece where nostalgia and evolution perfectly merge!" Whether it's the heartwarming graphics resembling exquisite miniature models or the greatly optimized, smooth, and comfortable controls, both veteran players and new fans are full of praise.

However, it's also important to note that the exciting shares and positive reviews currently seen on social media are largely based on content released under the official posting guidelines. As the guidelines strictly prohibit revealing critical story elements after the "Demon Space Temple" boss battle before the official release on February 5th, and also forbid editing videos or music individually, current reviews mostly focus on system optimizations and "limited sharing" of the initial experience.

While considering these "masterpiece confirmed" reviews, please maintain a degree of anticipation and observation, as the true story divergences and deep challenges will only be fully revealed after the official release.
