After nearly six years of troubled development and multiple reboots, Ubisoft has officially canceled the "Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time" remake, ending the long-delayed project originally slated for a 2021 release.
In a statement, Ubisoft admitted that bringing the project to its desired quality "would require more time and investment than the company could responsibly commit."
The full statement reads:
To the "Prince of Persia" community, we wanted to share this news directly with you: we have made the difficult decision to officially stop development of the "Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake." We know this will be deeply disappointing, as this project holds immense significance for fans and all the development teams involved.
While the project certainly had potential, we were ultimately unable to reach the quality standard you deserve. To continue would require further time and investment beyond what we could responsibly commit, and we did not want to release a product that would not live up to the spirit of "The Sands of Time."
"Prince of Persia" as a brand and legacy remains incredibly important to us. This decision does not mean we are stepping away from the franchise.
Thank you for your enduring passion, patience, and love for "Prince of Persia."

This announcement comes amid Ubisoft's recent large-scale business restructuring, nearly six years after the remake was first revealed and precisely five years since its original planned release date. The remake's development has been plagued by issues for years, initially handled by studios in Mumbai and Pune before being rebooted and transferred to Ubisoft Montreal in 2022, yet it never yielded concrete results.
Notably, this isn't the only recent setback for the "Prince of Persia" franchise. The 2024 release, "Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown," underperformed commercially, leading to the cancellation of its planned sequels. Meanwhile, the series' most recent entry, "The Rogue Prince of Persia," was developed by external studio Evil Empire.
