Deadline exclusively reported today that the American live-action film adaptation of "Gundam," starring rising young stars Sydney Sweeney and Noah Centineo, will be distributed by Netflix.
This marks Netflix's second involvement with the live-action "Gundam" project. Back in 2021, Netflix had partnered with producer Legendary Pictures to co-finance its development, with "Kong: Skull Island" director Jordan Vogt-Roberts attached to helm. However, in 2024, Vogt-Roberts unexpectedly exited the project, and Netflix subsequently withdrew its involvement. Now, Netflix is making a return. The streamer has not yet confirmed whether it plans a theatrical release or will debut the film exclusively on its platform.

The American live-action "Gundam" film will be written and directed by Jim Mickle, the showrunner behind the Netflix series "Sweet Tooth." Reportedly, the relationship between the male and female leads will mirror that of "Romeo and Juliet," burdened by a family feud. They belong to opposing planetary factions and become embroiled in an interstellar war, but ultimately find a connection with each other. However, the film's narrative focus is said to lean more heavily towards Sweeney's character.
