Still Dashing and Legendary After 30 Years: MG Wing Gundam Zero EW Ver.Ka & Full Build Log

Gundam Wing, released in 1995, is now over 30 years old.

Both its mobile suit and character designs have had a significant impact on Gundam history.

The appearance of the Wing Gundam Zero in the OVA "Endless Waltz" was truly breathtaking at the time.

The first MG Wing Gundam Zero EW, released in 2004, was a massive hit, selling out everywhere.

In 2020, MG released the Ver.Ka, which improved upon the numerous flaws of the old version, marking a major breakthrough.

Now, let's take a look at the Wing Gundam Zero EW, a mobile suit that remains incredibly popular even after 30 years.

As usual, I've made some modifications.

The changes aren't extensive, but they were very time-consuming...

【Before & After Straight Build Comparison】
The basic proportions have not been adjusted.
I only added scribed lines and pla-plate details.

【Head】
1. Scribed short, wide lines and stepped details on the top of the head.
2. Scribed trapezoidal stepped details on the edges of the blue ear parts.

【Chest】
1. Layered pla-plate on the upper edge of the Vulcan cannons.
2. Added 0.7mm wide lines with 0.5mm plastic dots.
3. Added small trapezoidal pla-plate decorations.

【Shoulders】
1. Short scribed lines + plastic dots.
2. Planning to insert custom-made parts into the hollowed-out sections of the shoulder armor.

【Arms】
1. Added decorative pla-plate parts to the upper arms.
2. Carved stepped details into the elbow joints and inserted half-round plastic rods for decoration.
3. Carved 0.7mm wide lines into the wrists and inserted 0.5mm plastic rods.
4. Scribed stepped details on the back of the hands.

【Waist】
1. Scribed stepped details on the armor edges.
2. Cut 0.5mm pla-plate for decoration on the front skirt armor.
3. Added 0.7mm wide lines with 0.5mm plastic dots and scribed stepped details on the edges of the side skirt armor.
4. Added scribed lines to the rear skirt armor.

【Legs】
1. Used techniques like short wide lines, long wide lines, and scribing stepped details on the thighs.
2. Added 0.7mm wide lines with 0.5mm plastic dots and short wide lines on the calves.
3. Scribed 0.5mm stepped details on the ankle armor, and scribed 0.7mm wide lines with 0.5mm plastic dots.
4. Added 0.3mm pla-plate for decoration.

【Wings】
1. Added scribed lines to the front wings.
2. Performed seam line removal on the rear wings.

Painting Techniques:
1. Primer/Surfacer
2. Highlight and Shadow Painting
3. RG-style Color Separation
4. Waterslide Decals and Panel Lining
5. Hand-painting details with water-based paint
6. Finished with a matte topcoat

【Main Body (Backpack Removed)】
The wings of the Wing Gundam are so eye-catching
that many details get lost in the shadows, so I decided to remove them for now.
Even without its backpack, the Wing Gundam looks incredibly cool.

【Main Body (Backpack Removed) Details】
I'm a big fan of carving out sections and inserting plastic rods.
The effect of fluorescent green rods on blue armor and orange rods on white armor works really well.

【Armaments】
It's a bit embarrassing to admit, but I didn't modify the two massive cannons at all.
My lazy streak always kicks in when it's time to work on the weapons...

【Main Body】
The old Wing Gundam Zero EW version was released in 2004.
It was a sensation back then and sold extremely well.
However, its biggest flaw was that the soft plastic feathers on the wings would fall off,
earning it the nickname "Feather-Shedding Gundam" from fans.
The new Wing Gundam Zero's feathers are made of hard plastic and are very secure, so they don't fall off.
Additionally, to accommodate the transformation, the joints are all very sturdy, so there are no loose legs.

【Action Poses】
Even with the fear of scratching the paint, I had to do a photoshoot.
The kneeling pose from the assembly manual is super awesome, so I had to replicate it.
Heero: "Mission, accepted..."

Atmosphere Re-entry Mode, descending to Earth from outer space.
The wings can act as a protective shield, but they are very tight and difficult to adjust.
Heero: "Guide me, ZERO."

Wings spread, an angel descends to Earth.
An iconic scene from the movie that blew the minds of all the teens back in the day.

Heero: "When you're lost, acting on your emotions is the right way for humans to live."

I always have to include a SEED-style firing pose.
Heero: "Target... locked on..."

A 360-degree full-burst attack.
The massive cannons have a special connection to the arms, so they don't droop.

Heero: "Anyone who stands in the way of my mission will be eliminated."

Twin Buster Rifle concentrated fire.
Another famous scene from the series.

Heero: "Tell me, Wufei! How many more people do I have to kill before this war is over? Zero tells me nothing."

The Wing Gundam Zero primarily focuses on long-range combat.
It only resorts to its beam saber as a last resort.
So I'm just bringing it out for a quick pose...
Heero: "I'll kill you."

Neo-Bird Mode (Space Mode)
The Wing Gundam Zero can transform into a fighter mode for high-speed mobility.
It can be configured for either space or atmospheric use.
In space mode, the main wings envelop the body for protection.
Heero: "Self-destructing... hurts like hell."

Neo-Bird Mode (Atmospheric Mode)
I forced myself to get this pose. The kit was covered in scratches after the shoot.
Heero: "Life is a cheap thing, especially mine."

That's all for this share.
Full of nostalgia, I hope everyone enjoyed it.
