The seventh installment in the slasher horror franchise "Scream" hit theaters worldwide last Thursday, performing as expected with a strong box office showing. In North America alone, it accumulated over $64.1 million, surpassing the $44.4 million record set by the sixth installment to become the highest-grossing opening weekend for the series in the region. Internationally, the seventh film garnered $33.1 million, bringing its global opening weekend total to a staggering $97.2 million—another new milestone for the franchise.

However, the seventh installment's production budget, at approximately $45 million, is the highest in the series' history. While this is a considerable sum for a horror film, which typically boasts lower budgets, its current box office trajectory suggests that recouping costs and achieving profitability will not be a significant challenge. Notably, 40% of the $97.2 million opening weekend gross came from premium format screenings such as IMAX and Screen X. This marks the first time the "Scream" franchise has released an IMAX version.

The strong box office performance of the seventh installment was clearly anticipated, with Paramount Pictures expressing full confidence. Reports surfaced even before its release that an eighth installment was already in pre-production, assuring fans they won't have to wait long for the next chapter.
