The sequel to "A Minecraft Movie," set to begin filming next month, today unveiled a new cast member: Kirsten Dunst. Deadline exclusively reported that she will portray Alex, a pivotal character from the original game.

Interestingly, Dunst had publicly expressed last year her desire to return to big-budget commercial films like "A Minecraft Movie," having not done one in a while. She then playfully joked about her usual films often underperforming at the box office, quipping, "Maybe I could make a movie that doesn't lose money for once?" She then specifically named "A Minecraft Movie 2" as a project she'd be thrilled to join, citing her children's love for the first installment. Unexpectedly, the production team heard her wish and made it a reality.

In addition to Dunst, original cast members Jason Momoa, Jack Black, Danielle Brooks, Matt Berry, and Jennifer Coolidge are also set to return. "Napoleon Dynamite" director Jared Hess is confirmed to return to direct, and Chris Galletta, one of the screenwriters for the first film, is also back to pen the script. The film is slated for a North American release on July 23, 2027.
