After its late last year release, "The Housemaid," an adaptation of the eponymous suspense novel, grossed nearly $400 million worldwide. Distributor Lionsgate quickly capitalized on its success, announcing a sequel early this year and confirming Sydney Sweeney's return to star. Evidently, the sequel's development is moving swiftly, as Deadline exclusively revealed today the first new cast member: Kirsten Dunst.

Deadline did not specify Dunst's role. However, based on Dunst's age and the plot of the sequel novel, "The Housemaid's Secret," she is likely to portray Mrs. Garrick, the new mistress of the household where protagonist Millie is employed.

The original "The Housemaid" novel is a trilogy. The second installment follows Sweeney's character, Millie, as she takes on a new housekeeping job for another wealthy family. Once again, she uncovers dark secrets within the new household, including a mistress seemingly subjected to spousal abuse. These unsettling discoveries ignite Millie's sense of justice, compelling her to intervene and rescue the victim.

Paul Feig, who directed the first film and is known for the "A Simple Favor" series, is expected to return to helm the sequel. Rebecca Sonnenshine, the screenwriter for the original, will also return to pen the script. Production is slated to begin this year.
