The "Harry Potter" novels were bestsellers, and the film adaptations dominated the global box office. Yet, despite the franchise's immense popularity, some people either missed the initial craze or only recently discovered the films. Andrew Garfield recently admitted in an interview with "Hits Radio" that he only just started watching the "Harry Potter" film series, praising the entire cast's performances, along with the technical and aesthetic quality of the films.
Garfield stated, "Honestly, I only just watched the 'Harry Potter' films recently, and Daniel Radcliffe was truly excellent in them. The entire series was really well-made."
Garfield continued, "Of course, I know this series is controversial right now. We shouldn't be putting money into the pockets of inhumane legislative bodies via the woman who shall not be named. But the soul, spirit, and essential themes of those films shouldn't be erased, and the child actors, the artists behind the scenes, and the art department also deserve applause. I'm currently working with a brilliant special effects makeup artist named Claire, who previously worked on creature models for the 'Harry Potter' series... I just feel like you shouldn't throw the baby out with the bathwater. So many incredible artists contributed to those films. In short, I've recently developed a renewed admiration for these artists."
While Garfield praised the film series, he clearly does not endorse author J.K. Rowling's controversial anti-transgender remarks. The "woman who shall not be named" he referred to is undoubtedly Rowling, and his mention of "inhumane legislative bodies" clearly alludes to the organizations and legislation she supports that are considered less friendly to the transgender community.
