Flea Market Find: Xbox Dev Kit Bought for $6 Contains 118GB of "Grand Theft Auto IV" Test Build Data

A "Grand Theft Auto" (GTA) fan recently shared an incredible discovery: they purchased an Xbox 360 development kit at a flea market for just £5 (approximately $6 USD), only to find it contained a massive amount of "Grand Theft Auto IV" test build data, sparking widespread discussion within the gaming community.

The discovery was first revealed on the GTA Forums, where the buyer, posting under the username "Janmatant," stated that the console was acquired at a car boot sale in Edinburgh, UK. The unit still bore a Rockstar North label, suggesting its origin from the "GTA IV" development team.

Screenshots shared on the forum indicated that the Xbox dev kit contained approximately 118GB of "GTA IV" test build data. Although some files had been deleted, community members successfully extracted unused and unfinished content from the remaining data, which they are now analyzing and sharing, drawing significant attention to the find.

Reports indicate this discovery also ties into a "GTA" forum thread dating back to 2014, where the community has spent years tracking and unearthing early versions and unreleased content for "GTA IV." The unexpected acquisition of this dev kit is considered a remarkably rare find.

However, the dev kit's fate remains uncertain. Janmatant stated that he initially planned to sell the device on eBay, listing it with an £800 "Buy It Now" price or a £400 starting bid for auction. After it was quickly purchased via "Buy It Now," he requested to relist it for auction. However, eBay subsequently removed the listing.

Janmatant mentioned that he is currently unsure if he can sell it for close to £800 but remains open to offers from other buyers. This unexpected appearance of an Xbox dev kit once again highlights how much valuable, unreleased data might still be hidden within the history of game development.
