Walt Disney Animation Studios' 50th feature film, "Tangled," was a significant box office success upon its release in 2010, grossing over $592 million worldwide. Its popularity has only grown in the years since, reaching an even wider fanbase through home video, television broadcasts, and streaming platforms over the past 16 years.

Given its enduring success, one might expect Disney to have pursued a direct sequel, especially with a live-action film now in development. However, "Tangled" has only received a few short films, three seasons of the animated series "Rapunzel's Tangled Adventure" (originally titled "Tangled: The Series" in its first season), and the television movie "Tangled: Before Ever After."

Addressing the public's curiosity, Nathan Greno, co-director of "Tangled," recently offered insight into why a direct sequel never materialized. He shared his perspective during an interview with The Direct while promoting his new Netflix animated film, "Swapped."

Greno stated that he was not opposed to a sequel, but explained that after completing "Tangled," finding a compelling story proved challenging. He drew parallels to other Disney classics, asking what stories could be told after Pinocchio becomes a real boy or after the Beast transforms back into a human in "Beauty and the Beast." Greno recalled an informal meeting at Disney where the original team gathered and discussed ideas for several hours. Ultimately, they concluded that they couldn't find a story truly worth telling. While he loved the characters, Greno mentioned that they did produce a short film featuring a wedding scene because audiences had inquired about it. However, he reiterated that, overall, a suitable story for a sequel simply couldn't be found.
