Four years ago, Universal Pictures reportedly planned to reboot the classic IP "Casper the Friendly Ghost" as a new live-action series, even tapping Taiwanese-American writer Kai Yu Wu, known for the Netflix series "The Ghost Bride," as its showrunner. However, after four years, the live-action "Casper" project has unexpectedly shifted to Disney, with Wu no longer involved and the entire concept being redeveloped from scratch.

Today, Deadline exclusively reported that Disney is now developing the "Casper the Friendly Ghost" live-action series, which is slated to stream on Disney+. Following Kai Yu Wu's departure, the new showrunner is Rob Letterman, director of "POKÉMON Detective Pikachu." He is joined by Hilary Winston, who previously collaborated with Letterman on another Disney+ series, "Goosebumps."

While specific plot details for the "Casper" live-action series remain under wraps, sources indicate the tone will lean towards an alternative, darker style, drawing comparisons to Netflix's hit series "Wednesday."
