Andrew Garfield Denies 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day' Return, Calls Fan Theories 'Absurd' — But Stays Coy

With the release of the first trailer for "Spider-Man: Brand New Day," speculation about hidden, unrevealed characters has intensified. Andrew Garfield, who previously played Spider-Man, recently addressed these rumors directly. He not only denied his involvement but also called fan interpretations of the trailer "absurd." However, his somewhat reserved comments have only fueled further speculation.

The controversy stems from a scene at the end of the trailer where Spider-Man leaps into a group of ninjas. Many viewers noted that some enemies' movements didn't seem entirely directed at the protagonist, leading to theories that the footage might have been digitally altered to conceal unannounced characters.

Similar tactics were employed in the "Spider-Man: No Way Home" trailer, where the official marketing deliberately obscured the appearances of Tobey Maguire and Garfield until closer to the film's release.

During an interview with Capital FM, Garfield dismissed the theories, stating that the idea was "a stretch" and that the perceived empty space below Spider-Man could be interpreted as room for more characters in "every frame."

He further criticized these theories as "crazy" and "conspiracy-level investigation," asserting that the public was over-analyzing the footage. However, his subsequent, playful remark, "But I'm not saying I'm not in it," only served to keep the rumors alive.

In addition to Garfield, Charlie Cox, widely rumored to return as Daredevil, also denied his involvement during an interview at the BAFTA Games Awards. He emphasized that he does not appear in the trailer footage, going so far as to say he is "definitely not in it" unless he was added digitally in post-production.

"Spider-Man: Brand New Day" is scheduled for release on July 31, 2026.
