Deadline exclusively reported today that acclaimed Brazilian director Fernando Meirelles, an Oscar nominee for "City of God," will launch sales for his new comedy "Art" at the upcoming Cannes Film Market. The film's plot and cast have been revealed ahead of the event.

The movie is an adaptation of the eponymous stage play by French playwright Yasmina Reza. It follows three longtime friends — Serge, Marc, and Yvan. Serge, a passionate collector of modern art, purchases an expensive, large, pure white painting featuring only faint white lines. Marc is appalled by Serge's extravagant spending, leading to a clash over their definitions of "art" and a strained friendship. Caught in the middle, Yvan attempts to mediate but only exacerbates the situation.

The cast is confirmed to feature Ralph Fiennes, Colin Farrell, and acclaimed Brazilian actor Wagner Moura, who will portray the trio of friends. Meirelles has a history with all three actors: he collaborated with Fiennes on "The Constant Gardener," directed five episodes of the Apple TV+ series "Sugar" starring Farrell, and executive produced several projects starring Moura, including the 2010 film "VIPs." All three are returning collaborators for Meirelles.

The screenplay is penned by Christopher Hampton, known for his work on "The Father" and "Atonement."
