The second installment in the "28 Days Later" sequel trilogy, "28 Years Later: The Bone Temple," garnered strong critical acclaim upon its release this January. Even audiences who disliked the previous film gave it high praise. At the box office, however, "The Bone Temple" was a complete flop. Compared to "28 Years Later"'s impressive $150 million haul, "The Bone Temple" plummeted to a mere $57.9 million, a drop of nearly $100 million.

Many factors can contribute to box office underperformance. Nia DaCosta, director of "The Bone Temple," recently offered her analysis in an interview with Empire magazine. "It's funny because all the metrics we use in the industry to gauge if a film is good, if audiences like it, and if they want to see it, were off the charts, but it didn't translate to the box office," DaCosta explained. "I made a great movie, I'm very proud of it, and audiences liked it. Perhaps it was released too quickly (only six months between the two installments), because some people would say, 'Oh, I saw this last summer.' But I would tell them, 'No, no, no, this is the sequel!'"

Despite the box office setback, DaCosta has managed to adjust her mindset. "A few years ago, a friend told me, 'Nia, your career is meant to be enjoyed.' I've been working hard to live by that and keep it in mind these past few years," she shared. "I was certainly disappointed when the film didn't perform well at the box office. But at the same time, I thought, 'Once people see this movie, they're going to love it, and that makes me happy.' I wish it had achieved higher box office numbers, but I am genuinely very proud of this film."
