Japanese manufacturer PLEX has revealed the latest entry in its sofubi blind box series, the "Mini Sofubi Chronicle," with a new set themed around the iconic Toho kaiju Mothra. The "Godzilla Mini Sofubi Chronicle [MOTHRA SAGA]" is officially slated for a May 2026 release.
Toho's giant divine moth, Mothra, is celebrating her 65th anniversary. First appearing in the 1961 film "Mothra," her massive 250-meter wingspan established the iconic image of a creature that transforms from larva to imago, boasting beautifully colored patterns on her wings. While she later appeared as both an adversary and an ally in the "Godzilla" series—often with a significant size reduction—her role as a guardian of ancient civilizations and a symbol of peace on Earth has left a lasting impression on fans.
It wasn't until the 1996 Heisei "Rebirth of Mothra" trilogy that her unique appeal was fully explored and elevated. The "New Mothra" (Mothra Leo) introduced in these films shattered the previous image of a fragile creature with limited offensive capabilities. Instead, Mothra Leo could unleash a variety of powerful scale-based attacks and energy beams, and even possessed the ability to evolve and change forms, causing a massive resurgence in her popularity. It's now been 22 years since Mothra's last Toho film appearance in "Godzilla: Final Wars." With the incredible success of "Godzilla Minus One" and "Godzilla Minus Color," fans are left wondering if other classic Toho kaiju will get their chance to return to the big screen.
The "Godzilla Mini Sofubi Chronicle [MOTHRA SAGA]" will be sold in a blind box format, featuring a total of 10 different monsters from Mothra's film history to collect. Each vinyl figure stands at a compact 4cm tall, meticulously crafted in a super-deformed (SD) style with precise detailing and paintwork. Special attention has been paid to Mothra's wings, faithfully recreating their gorgeous and intricate patterns.
