Marvel's upcoming series "Daredevil: Born Again" recently sparked widespread discussion on social media due to a particular action sequence featuring Jon Bernthal as The Punisher.
In the scene, Jon Bernthal's portrayal of Frank Castle, The Punisher, leaps backward from a rooftop, firing at enemies, and then crashes onto an air conditioning unit. This specific shot has drawn criticism from many viewers, who claim it looks like unfinished CGI and even resembles a cutscene from the "Grand Theft Auto" series.

The sequence initially aimed for a "Max Payne"-esque slow-motion gunfight style, with the first half of the action appearing quite fluid. However, when the camera cuts to Castle impacting the air conditioning unit, many fans found themselves pulled out of the experience. Viewers noted that the way the unit exploded resembled video game physics, and the character's limb movements appeared overly stiff. Furthermore, Bernthal's face was clearly visible, yet showed almost no expression of pain or fear, making the entire shot seem unnatural.
Social media quickly filled with mocking comments. Some users directly stated that the scene "really looks like a 'GTA' cutscene," while others criticized it as one of the worst CGI animations they had seen in recent years, even describing Bernthal as resembling a PS4-era Joel from "The Last of Us."
However, while many initially assumed the shot was entirely computer-animated, The Hollywood Reporter, citing sources, revealed that it was, in fact, a practical stunt. Bernthal himself performed the initial falling motion, with a stunt double completing the actual impact with the air conditioning unit. The report indicated that the primary visual effects work for the shot involved digitally replacing the stunt double's face with Bernthal's.

Therefore, the issue might not be that the entire sequence was CGI, but rather a problem with post-production. Bernthal's digitally inserted face appeared overly prominent in the shot, and the slow-motion effect, which diminished the impact's force, combined with what appeared to be added camera shake, could have made the otherwise practical stunt appear less convincing.
