Nicolas Cage has a long and varied history with superhero films. Throughout his career, he was once slated to play DC's Superman in the unproduced "Superman Lives" film, starred as Big Daddy in "Kick-Ass," and portrayed Ghost Rider in the Marvel universe. He also voiced the animated "Spider-Noir," a character who is now set to headline his own live-action series. However, long before taking on the role of Spider-Noir, Cage nearly became a classic "Spider-Man" villain.

Longtime fans might recall the extensive casting discussions for the Green Goblin role in Tobey Maguire's 2002 "Spider-Man" film over two decades ago. The list of contenders at the time included notable actors such as Jason Isaacs, John Malkovich, Billy Bob Thornton, and Nicolas Cage himself.

While promoting his upcoming "Spider-Noir" series, Cage recently spoke with People magazine and reflected on that period. He admitted to turning down "Spider-Man" to take on Spike Jonze's critically acclaimed film "Adaptation." instead. Cage stated that for him, "it was the right decision at the time." He also commented that he is interested in both heroic and villainous roles and doesn't have a particular preference, adding that he has played many villains and enjoys both types of characters, considering them important components of cinema. He emphasized that he doesn't want to be confined to one aspect of acting.
