Queen Maeve's Absence From 'The Boys' Final Season Explained: Showrunner Says Actress Has Retired

As "The Boys" prepares to wrap up its main storyline with a fifth and final season, one of the original Seven's most important members, Queen Maeve, was notably absent from the grand finale, leaving many viewers to wonder why she didn't return for a final farewell.

In a recent interview, showrunner Eric Kripke confirmed that the creative team had originally hoped to arrange a cameo for Maeve, but the actress who plays her, Dominique McElligott, ultimately declined the invitation.

Queen Maeve's last appearance was in the Season 3 finale of "The Boys," where she lost her powers after a clash with Soldier Boy and went on the run. Because the character was not killed off, the door was left open for a future return. As the series headed into its final chapter, many fans anticipated she would reappear at a critical moment.

Kripke told Gold Derby that he was very keen on having Maeve return and had discussed the possibility with McElligott. He explained that while the two still occasionally correspond via email, McElligott has largely stepped away from the entertainment industry and was unavailable due to scheduling conflicts, preventing her from returning to film. He stressed that the entire process was very amicable, with no disputes or hard feelings.

Kripke recalled asking her if she would be willing to film a scene if they wrote one for her. He said she replied that she had "kind of left the business" and was very busy, so she unfortunately couldn't make it work, but asked him to send her regards to everyone. Kripke added that this was the full story, dismissing any speculation about creative differences or behind-the-scenes issues.

In fact, speaking with TV Insider, he added that he and McElligott still check in with each other every six to eight months, and she even reached out to him after the Palisades fire. Since the team needed to lock in plans for the final season well in advance, he had asked her early on if she would be willing to come back for a day of shooting. However, McElligott responded that she was "pretty much retired and not really acting anymore" and also had other plans during that time.

Although they couldn't bring Maeve back in person, Kripke said the team still wanted to honor the character in other ways. Maeve was featured in retrospective footage, symbolizing her passing the torch to Annie, who in turn passes that spirit on to Marie. He pointed out that this throughline represents a powerful female legacy that started with Maeve.

"If we can't really have her appear in person, we still want to evoke the spirit of Maeve," Kripke said. Although the flagship "The Boys" series has concluded, the universe will continue to expand through spinoffs, including a developing prequel set in the 1950s focusing on Soldier Boy.
