After more than a decade in development, Mel Gibson's official sequel to "The Passion of the Christ"—the two-part epic titled "The Resurrection Of The Christ"—has finally unveiled its first still. The image reveals the new look for Jesus and comes with the announcement that principal photography on both films is now complete.

Additionally, the studio announced a significant shift in the release schedule. Part I, originally slated for Good Friday on March 26, 2027, will now premiere 40 days later on Ascension Day, May 6, 2027. Consequently, Part II has been pushed back an entire year and is now set to release on Ascension Day, May 25, 2028.

Gibson co-wrote the screenplays for both films with his "Braveheart" collaborator, Randall Wallace. With a combined budget reportedly reaching a massive $250 million, Gibson has teased that the sequels will delve into fantastical territory, depicting Jesus's journey through Hell, the fall of angels, and epic battles between celestial beings, all brought to life with extensive CG effects. In a departure from the original's commitment to historical authenticity, "The Resurrection Of The Christ" will be in English to ensure broader audience accessibility, forgoing the Aramaic and Hebrew dialogue of the first film.

The cast has been completely overhauled for the sequel. Finnish actor Jaakko Ohtonen ("Vikings: Valhalla") is set to take over the role of Jesus from Jim Caviezel. He is joined by Mariela Garriga ("Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning") as Mary Magdalene, replacing Monica Bellucci, and Polish actress Kasia Smutniak as Mary, taking over from Maia Morgenstern.

Other new faces include Italian actor Pier Luigi Pasino as Peter and Riccardo Scamarcio as Pontius Pilate, rounding out the completely new ensemble.
