For years, many fans of "The Lord of the Rings" series have harbored one major wish: to see J.R.R. Tolkien's other monumental Middle-earth work, "The Silmarillion," adapted into a live-action film or television series.

However, realizing this dream required overcoming a significant hurdle: Christopher Tolkien, J.R.R. Tolkien's son, and the Tolkien Estate. They had long expressed numerous grievances regarding Peter Jackson's "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy and "The Hobbit" trilogy, reportedly viewing Jackson's adaptations as mere video game-like action films for teenagers that failed to capture the true essence of the original works. Consequently, they had repeatedly rejected Jackson's requests for adaptation rights.

Now, however, the Estate's stance appears to have softened slightly. While attending this year's Cannes Film Festival to receive an honorary Palme d'Or, Jackson spoke with Deadline. During the interview, Jackson revealed that the chances of securing adaptation rights for "The Silmarillion" and "Unfinished Tales of Númenor and Middle-earth" are now higher than before, with negotiations still ongoing.

Jackson stated, "Christopher Tolkien later published other Tolkien works, including 'The Silmarillion' and 'Unfinished Tales.' I mean, there are many other Tolkien works that could absolutely be adapted into fantastic films, but Christopher adamantly refused to allow any film adaptation ideas to materialize, so the rights to these works were never made available."

He continued, "But Christopher passed away two or three years ago, and now the next generation of the Tolkien family — the younger members of the Tolkien family — are managing the Tolkien Estate, and they are more willing to 'talk' with us. So, Warner Bros. and we have been in discussions with some of the younger members of the Tolkien Estate regarding licensing other works. It would be fantastic if we could break free from the constraints of the appendices and acquire some more substantial material for adaptation."

Jackson mentioned the appendices because the prequel "The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim," released two years ago, along with the currently developing projects "The Hunt for Gollum" and "Shadows of the Past", are all adapted from the appendices of "The Lord of the Rings" novel trilogy and fragments originally cut from the films. However, these appendices and fragments do not constitute complete narratives, which is why he hopes to acquire more extensive source material.
