'The Witcher 3' Is Dropping Windows 10 & HDD Support Ahead of New 2027 DLC

CD Projekt Red has officially announced "Songs of the Past," a brand new DLC for "The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt" set to launch in 2027. This marks the first major expansion for Geralt's adventures since the acclaimed "Blood and Wine." Alongside the reveal, the developer also announced an update to the game's PC system requirements—the first change to its hardware specs in nearly four years.

“As we prepare to add new content to the game, we need to update the system requirements to ensure future performance and compatibility,” CD Projekt Red stated. The new requirements will take effect with the next update and will apply to the base version of "The Witcher 3," affecting all players, not just those who purchase "Songs of the Past."

According to the official announcement, the new minimum PC requirements will be an AMD Ryzen 5 2600 or Intel Core i5-8400 CPU, paired with an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 or AMD Radeon RX 5500 XT (8GB) GPU. The game will also require at least 12GB of RAM, 6GB of VRAM, and 70GB of SSD storage space. Notably, future versions will no longer support traditional HDDs, making an SSD mandatory to run the game.

Furthermore, "The Witcher 3" will run exclusively on DirectX 12 going forward. Citing a lack of ongoing security updates and support from platform and graphics driver partners, CDPR will also cease testing the game on Windows 10. For players whose hardware does not meet the new specs, the developer confirmed it will still be possible to revert to an earlier version of the game to continue playing.
