Emilia Clarke on "Secret Invasion" and "Solo": "Nobody Liked" Them, Admits Franchise Failures Aren't Personal

Emilia Clarke, who rose to fame as Daenerys Targaryen in "Game of Thrones," has recently participated in several major film and television franchises, but has faced critical setbacks more than once.

In a recent interview with Variety, she discussed her experiences with critical reception for projects like "Secret Invasion," "Solo: A Star Wars Story," and "Terminator Genisys," adding that she understands external reactions "aren't personal."

Clarke spoke lightheartedly about the reception of the Marvel series "Secret Invasion" during the interview, joking, "I don't think *nobody* liked that show, guys, I'm sorry!" She then candidly addressed other franchise projects, stating, "Star Wars? They didn't like it. Terminator? That shouldn't have happened."

For Clarke, participating in major franchises doesn't guarantee success. Beyond the strong fan controversy surrounding "Game of Thrones" Season 8, her role as G'iah in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as Qi'ra in "Solo: A Star Wars Story," and her portrayal of Sarah Connor in "Terminator Genisys" have all faced intense scrutiny from audiences and critics.

However, Clarke doesn't attribute these failures to herself personally. She stated that these were jobs she agreed to take on, and she often joined established franchises with massive fan bases.

"I'm joining something that's already existing, so when it doesn't work, it's not personal," she added.

Discussing her future acting career, Clarke said she needs to "wait for the right thing," but emphasized that she won't dwell on a project's subsequent reception. She explained that her connection to a project ends when the crew calls "wrap," because how audiences ultimately perceive the work is not something she can control.
