Steam Deck Sees Massive Price Hike: 1TB OLED Model Hits $949 But Still Sells Out Rapidly Amidst Strong Demand

Valve recently increased the price of the Steam Deck, with the 1TB OLED version of the handheld gaming PC now reaching $949, a significant $300 jump from its original price. Despite the substantial hike, the Steam Deck sold out again in less than 24 hours after its restock, demonstrating robust market demand.

The Steam Deck's price increase is not an isolated incident, as gaming hardware prices have generally been affected by rising costs. In March, the PlayStation 5 also saw a price adjustment, and with the ongoing RAM supply crisis, industry observers anticipate more consoles and related hardware could face price hikes in the future. While higher prices may gradually curb consumer purchasing intent, the rapid sell-out of the Steam Deck's latest restock suggests the market has not yet reached a critical point of demand collapse.

It remains unclear how many Steam Deck units Valve actually restocked this time. However, observations indicate that the company has been consistently receiving large shipments labeled "game consoles" from China over the past few weeks. While initial speculation suggested these might be related to the Steam Machine, it now appears at least some of these shipments are likely Steam Deck replenishment stock.

It's also possible that Valve did not release its entire inventory at once, opting instead for a staggered release to prevent overwhelming its logistics and distribution systems. Prior to this, the Steam Deck had been out of stock for several months. It was once considered a relatively affordable entry point into the PC gaming market, but this advantage has been significantly diminished following the price increase.

Nevertheless, the Steam Deck's rapid sell-out at a higher price point underscores its strong brand appeal and the sustained demand within the handheld PC market. The industry's attention will now turn to when Valve plans its next restock and whether the elevated price will enable a more stable supply of the device.
