The classic animated series "Inspector Gadget," which debuted in 1983, was adapted by Disney into a live-action feature film in 1999. It starred comedic actor Matthew Broderick as the titular cyborg detective, Gadget. Despite a production budget of nearly $100 million, the film grossed a disappointing $134 million worldwide and received lukewarm reviews. While a sequel was later produced, it was a low-budget, direct-to-video release with an entirely new cast.

Years later, in 2015, Disney initiated development on a new live-action "Inspector Gadget" film. "Saturday Night Live" cast member Mikey Day joined the project as a writer in 2019. However, the reboot has remained dormant for the past seven years, with no further updates.

This morning, however, renowned entertainment scooper Daniel Richtman revealed on his private Patreon page that comedy superstar Will Ferrell is in talks to star in the new live-action "Inspector Gadget" movie. Sean Anders, who previously directed Ferrell in "Spirited" and the "Daddy's Home" franchise, is confirmed to helm the project. While further details are scarce, this news suggests the long-gestating project is finally moving forward.
