Baldur's Gate 2 Remake Reportedly in Development: Original Lead Designer Returns, First Game Also Potentially Getting Remake

Following the massive global success of "Baldur's Gate 3," Wizards of the Coast appears poised to further revitalize the classic RPG series. According to a report from PC Gamer, a remake of "Baldur's Gate 2" is reportedly in development, with original lead designer Kevin Martens having joined the development team.

The report, citing an anonymous source, states that Martens is currently involved in the "Baldur's Gate 2" remake. Notably, he has recently collaborated with Wizards of the Coast, having worked on "Exodus," a sci-fi RPG developed by Archetype Entertainment and published by Wizards of the Coast. His potential return to the "Baldur's Gate" franchise, therefore, is not without precedent.

While current rumors focus on "Baldur's Gate 2," it's also rumored that the original "Baldur's Gate" could receive a remake. This would be a logical move, as the second game's narrative directly follows the first. In the original titles, players could even import character data to continue their adventure from the previous installment. Remaking only the second game while skipping the first could create a significant narrative gap for new players.

Both "Baldur's Gate" and "Baldur's Gate 2" previously received Enhanced Editions, which brought the classic titles back into the spotlight. However, if these new remake rumors prove true, the remakes are expected to go beyond simple graphical upgrades, offering a more comprehensive overhaul of gameplay content and visual presentation. No official plans have been announced, nor has a potential release window been hinted at.

Meanwhile, Wizards of the Coast clearly has long-term plans for the "Baldur's Gate" franchise. Wizards of the Coast President John Hight previously confirmed that "there will be a successor to 'Baldur's Gate 3' in the future," indicating that "Baldur's Gate 4" will eventually arrive. However, with Larian Studios having stated they will not be developing a sequel, which studio will take on the next main installment remains unknown.
