DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran recently revealed during promotions for "Supergirl" that an HBO series centered on Jimmy Olsen and Gorilla Grodd is slated to begin filming later this year.
Safran discussed the future plans for the DCU, mentioning "Supergirl," the HBO series "Lanterns," "Clayface," "Superman: Man of Tomorrow," and "The Brave and the Bold," which will introduce Batman to the DCU.
"We also talked about the HBO Gorilla Grodd series, and that's going to shoot this year. That's big news, by the way, I probably shouldn't have said that!" he added.
Previous reports from foreign media indicated that DC Studios and HBO Max are developing a fictional true-crime series set in the DCU, tentatively titled "DC Crime." The show is envisioned as a crime documentary hosted by Jimmy Olsen, with its first season reportedly focusing on Gorilla Grodd.
Skyler Gisondo portrays Jimmy Olsen in the new "Superman" film, where he is considered one of the standout characters. Gorilla Grodd, a classic "The Flash" villain who debuted in 1959, possesses high intelligence, super strength, speed, telepathy, and telekinesis. He has previously appeared in animated series, games, and the "Arrowverse" shows.
While other DCU series like "Booster Gold" are still in development, if this Gorilla Grodd/Jimmy Olsen project begins filming this year, it could be one of the earliest small-screen productions to move forward in the next phase of the DCU.
