Newcomer filmmaker Curry Barker's self-written, directed, and starring original horror film, "Obsession," has emerged as one of the year's most surprising dark horse hits. Without a star-studded cast or existing IP, and made for a mere $750,000, the film has already amassed a global box office of $287 million and is poised to cross the $300 million mark. Its phenomenal box office success is largely attributed to overwhelming word-of-mouth praise from audiences, with positive buzz leading to an unprecedented weekly box office increase at one point. While the decline has now stabilized, the drop-off remains remarkably low.

With its financial success secured, the film is now setting its sights on awards season. Barker recently told The Hollywood Reporter that Focus Features, the film's distributor, is preparing to launch an awards campaign for "Obsession." He noted he wasn't privy to the exact campaign details, as his focus remains on developing his next projects.
Additionally, Barker teased that he already has ideas for an "Obsession" sequel. He stated that while he doesn't want to rush into a direct follow-up, he has some "really cool" sequel concepts he can't yet reveal. He clarified that this doesn't mean waiting five to six years for a sequel, expressing confidence that audiences will still be excited for it even with a slight delay. He added that he's currently "in a whirlwind" and still "figuring things out."
