Deadline recently exclusively reported that Academy Award winner Sean Penn has found his next project. This time, Penn will step behind the camera to direct, not act, with the lead role set for Bradley Cooper, who previously collaborated with Penn on "Licorice Pizza."

Penn's upcoming film will tackle the 2021 U.S. Capitol riot. However, it will approach the event from the perspective of a police officer, beginning with the officer's early career experiences before getting unexpectedly caught up in the riot. Deadline also noted that the film's core narrative revolves around an unexpected friendship and will depict the entire incident through various narrative layers. The police officer character is based on a real person who has granted permission for their story to be adapted, though their identity remains undisclosed.
In addition to directing, Penn also penned the screenplay. While Cooper has not yet formally signed, he is reportedly in final negotiations for the role and is essentially confirmed to star. Production is slated to begin in mid-next year.
