The third installment in the "Despicable Me" spin-off series, "Minions & Monsters," recently announced an unexpected major star joining its voice cast: George Lucas, the creator of "Star Wars." Chris Meledandri, CEO of Illumination, the animation studio behind the "Despicable Me" franchise, made the surprising revelation in a recent exclusive interview with Collider.

Meledandri (pictured below) recalled how he met Lucas, stating that he had the good fortune of meeting George about two years prior. He explained that their meeting came about because Lucas was a huge fan of Illumination's films, particularly "Despicable Me," and even more specifically, the Minions themselves. Meledandri expressed his excitement upon learning this, eager to share the news with the Illumination team, as Lucas was clearly one of the few individuals who commanded such high respect from their entire company.

Meledandri continued, explaining that they had an idea for a new character in the story. He then suggested to Pierre Coffin, who co-wrote the script with Brian Lynch, and Bill Ryan, who served as a producer alongside him, about the possibility of asking George Lucas to voice the role. Meledandri recounted their initial disbelief, saying they responded with "Are you kidding me?" He was then surprised by how quickly Lucas agreed, calling it "incredible" and expressing their immense pleasure in having him participate in the film. Meledandri also revealed that he had recently seen Lucas again, and Lucas was already discussing what character he wanted to play in the next "Minions" installment, which Meledandri found "pretty incredible."
