Two years ago, Warner Bros. Animation first announced that a new "Tom and Jerry" movie was in development. The studio had tapped "The Office" star Rashida Jones, "Toy Story 4" screenwriter Will McCormack, and Oscar-winning "If Anything Happens I Love You" director Michael Govier to co-write the script.
In a new interview published this morning by Variety, Jones and McCormack offered further details regarding the film's plot.

According to the writers, Tom and Jerry are separately adopted by two kind-hearted individuals who subsequently fall in love with each other. However, the feuding duo can't resist their old habits, resuming their rivalry and attempting to sabotage their owners' burgeoning romance. McCormack described the project as a "romantic comedy in the vein of 'La La Land'." He elaborated, "Tom and Jerry will try to kill each other and break up their owners. Why are these two characters fighting? Because they want attention, they want love. Our movie's tagline is: Love is worth fighting for."
