Six years ago, Universal Pictures announced plans to adapt the beloved children's book series "The Magic School Bus" into a live-action/animated hybrid film. However, Universal's rights expired before the movie could be produced. The adaptation project has since moved to Legendary Pictures, the new rights holder. Legendary recently announced a major update for the film, confirming that Rob Letterman, who directed "POKÉMON Detective Pikachu," is set to write and direct the feature.

Elizabeth Banks, who directed 2019's "Charlie's Angels" and was involved in the live-action development during Universal's tenure, will continue as a producer alongside Marc Platt, a producer known for the "Wicked" series. Banks, recognized for her roles in Tobey Maguire's "Spider-Man" trilogy and "The Hunger Games" franchise, will also star as the film's protagonist, Ms. Frizzle.
