Last June, Deadline reported that Dwayne Johnson was in talks to collaborate with "Black Swan" director Darren Aronofsky on a cult-themed drama titled "Breakthrough," with A24 set to distribute. Recently, acclaimed film journalist Daniel Richtman further revealed on his Patreon page that Timothée Chalamet is also in negotiations to join the cast.
Set in turn-of-the-millennium Southern California, "Breakthrough" follows an alienated young man who falls under the influence of a charismatic religious leader. This leader's intoxicating charm, however, masks his morally questionable manipulation and a deep-seated darkness. Johnson is confirmed to play the guru in a supporting role, while Richtman indicates Chalamet would portray the reclusive young protagonist. The screenplay was penned by rising actor-writer Zeke Goodman. A release date for the film has not yet been announced.
