“GTA 6” Boxed Download Code Sparks Retailer Boycott: Two Game Stores Stand Firm on Physical Media, Igniting Player Ownership Debate

Rockstar Games recently confirmed that the physical edition of "Grand Theft Auto VI" will not include a game disc, opting instead for a "boxed download code" format. This decision has sparked dissatisfaction among some players who value physical collections and game ownership. With the highly anticipated title slated for release on November 19, 2026, and its standard edition priced at $79.99, the practice of spending nearly $80 for just an empty box and a code has led some physical retailers to draw a line in the sand.

Canadian retailer Video Games Plus shared their stance on X (formerly Twitter):

U.S. physical media retailer Loot Box Gaming made a similar decision, stating that if the boxed code version news proved true, they would not sell the game. The company noted that its founding principle stemmed from a deep appreciation for physical media, and thus, they could not sell a product that didn't align with their core values. When players pointed out that this decision wouldn't impact Rockstar's sales, Loot Box Gaming responded, "We hope 'GTA 6' achieves massive success, but in doing so, we also cannot betray our business principles."

While the impact of these two stores on overall sales may be limited, their stance reflects a broader unease among players regarding the evolving definition of a "physical edition." Previously, rumors circulated that Rockstar might delay the physical release to prevent leaks; now, the boxed code format appears to be a compromise, yet it has still failed to quell the ongoing controversy.
