Rockstar Games has confirmed that physical editions of "Grand Theft Auto VI" will not contain game discs, opting instead for a "boxed download code" format. While this decision has sparked discontent among collectors and game preservation advocates, several industry analysts believe the controversy is unlikely to significantly impact the title's sales.
Slated for a November 19, 2026 release, the standard edition of "GTA 6" will retail for $79.99. For many players, shelling out nearly $80 for a physical box devoid of a disc undeniably diminishes the sense of ownership and collectibility traditionally associated with physical releases. Some game retailers have even stated they will not stock the title until a disc-inclusive version becomes available.
However, game industry analyst Christopher Dring, speaking with VGC, acknowledged that the decision is understandably disappointing for some players and could impact consumers less familiar with digital downloads.
“This decision is understandably going to upset some players, and it may impact some consumers who aren’t particularly familiar with digital downloads. But honestly, for most people, it won’t make much difference. Ultimately, players will accept it because it’s 'GTA,'” he stated.
Dring also highlighted that the primary beneficiaries of this shift are likely to be the PlayStation Store and Xbox digital storefronts. Given that the boxed version is essentially just a download code, many players might simply opt for a direct digital purchase. Conversely, pre-owned game retailers and marketplaces like eBay could emerge as the biggest losers, as the lack of a physical disc significantly diminishes both resale and collector value.
Mat Piscatella, Senior Director and game industry analyst at Circana, echoed this sentiment, suggesting the boxed download code format is unlikely to impact "GTA 6"'s overall sales performance. Considering the fervent player reaction to even just the cover art reveal, the title's immense brand power will likely still be enough to overshadow any controversy sparked by the physical edition's format.
