DC Comics' recent hit series "Absolute Batman" is officially being adapted into an animated show, co-developed by Warner Bros. Animation and DC Studios.
The announcement was made during the 2026 Annecy International Animation Film Festival. Original comic writer Scott Snyder and artist Nick Dragotta are attached to the project, with Snyder set to serve as executive producer and showrunner, and Dragotta as a producer.
The "Absolute Batman" comic launched DC's "Absolute Universe" line in late 2024, reimagining Bruce Wayne's origin. This version of Batman is not the son of a wealthy Gothamite but a blue-collar worker from the projects. He also loses only one parent and is depicted with a rougher, more muscular, street-level aesthetic.
The series has sold over 6 million copies to date, and the first issue of "Absolute Batman" has gone through 11 printings, making it one of DC's most successful new initiatives in recent years.
In addition to "Absolute Batman," DC Studios and Warner Bros. Animation also revealed more animated projects. DC's first animated series, "Joker: Laugh Riot," has been officially greenlit. The story follows the Joker as he dives into Gotham's underworld to find Batman's murderer. In the process, he gradually shifts from villain to a vigilante-like figure, forced to confront the question of who he is without Batman.
Furthermore, an untitled series starring Krypto the Superdog is now in development. The story will follow Krypto after he leaves Superman and Supergirl, embarking on absurd adventures with a group of wannabe criminals whose fates he unexpectedly changes with his pure yet destructive personality.
Warner Bros. Animation and DC are also moving forward with the second season of "Batman: Caped Crusader" and other projects like "Batman: Knightfall."
