Two years ago, comedy superstar Eddie Murphy accidentally let slip that the "Shrek" franchise was quietly developing a second spin-off film, following "Puss in Boots." The beloved sidekick, Donkey, whom Murphy has long voiced, was revealed as the protagonist. Now, two years later, Universal Pictures has officially announced the release date for Donkey's solo movie at this year's Annecy International Animation Film Festival.

Universal has slated the Donkey solo film for a June 30, 2028 release. This places it exactly one year after "Shrek 5," which is set to hit theaters on June 30, 2025. While official details remain scarce, the studio briefly described the project as an origin story exploring "how Donkey became Donkey."
The film will be co-directed by Charlie Bean, known for helming the live-action "Lady and the Tramp," and Matt Flynn, a storyboard artist who has contributed to numerous DreamWorks animated features, including "Puss in Boots: The Last Wish." The screenwriting team and additional voice cast members have yet to be announced.
