Following the lifting of the embargo for DC Studios' new film "Supergirl," its Rotten Tomatoes score initially climbed from a "Rotten" 59% to a "Fresh" 62%. However, as more reviews were tallied, the score has since dropped back to 57% across 119 reviews, re-entering "Rotten" territory, making it one of the less favorably reviewed entries in the nascent DCU.
"Supergirl" notably lags behind other DCU projects, including "Creature Commandos" at 95%, "Peacemaker" Season 2 at 94%, and James Gunn's upcoming "Superman" at 83%. It's also significant that "Supergirl" is the first DCU film not written or directed by Gunn.
Several major media outlets offered reserved assessments of the film. Deadline noted that while the movie had its strong moments and sharp dialogue, it ultimately "didn't quite feel right." The Hollywood Reporter suggested that audiences invested in the DCU might want to wait for Gunn's return next year to direct "Superman." Variety went further, describing the film as "flat to super-terrible," criticizing its desperate attempts to convey a "punk rock" sensibility that ultimately felt hollow.
Despite the prevailing negative sentiment, some entertainment sites provided more positive takes. GamesRadar+ called the film a dark, chaotic space adventure, while Empire found Milly Alcock's portrayal of the hungover hero quite charming. Even amidst the negative reviews, Alcock's performance as Kara Zor-El has been widely praised.
Foreign media also pointed out that while "Supergirl" may not have delivered an ideal second step for the DCU, Kara's future remains one to watch, with Alcock set to reprise her role in next year's "Superman."
