Ahead of the release of Milly Alcock's "Supergirl," screenwriter Ana Nogueira revealed in a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly that she had previously penned a script for the DCEU-era version of the character, played by Sasha Calle. Nogueira confirmed that the unproduced film was almost entirely different from the upcoming DCU movie.
Calle debuted as Superman's cousin in 2023's "The Flash," and DC's previous leadership had planned to develop a standalone "Supergirl" film starring the actress.
However, that project was shelved when James Gunn and Peter Safran took the helm at DC Studios, bringing the DCEU to a close. Speaking about the old script, Nogueira stated, "It was completely different. I don't even think I can say what it was about, but it really couldn't be more different."
"Literally, nothing from one 'Supergirl' movie transferred into the other, which is crazy," she added, emphasizing that the two versions featured major changes in character, tone, and mythology.
The new "Supergirl" film is an adaptation of the "Woman of Tomorrow" comic arc by Tom King and Bilquis Evely, which follows Kara Zor-El as she embarks on a revenge quest with a young alien girl named Ruthye.
Still, Nogueira believes the work on the original project wasn't for nothing. "That was very helpful to me, when you're doing this kind of work, you have to really familiarize yourself with a lot of things, like power sets, what these characters can do, what a fight would look like, how strong you want them to be," she explained.
"How strong is Superman? He's as strong as the writer needs him to be. If you need them to throw a planet, you can do that. If you need him to get his ass kicked, you can do that too," Nogueira continued. "So that was really helpful, because I was already very familiar with Supergirl's power set."
As for Calle, who will not be reprising the role, she reflected on the experience in a previous interview, stating: "I'm really very, very, very thoroughly grateful for it, because it brought me into a world where I can create art, and I loved that experience."
