The second film in the new DC Universe after "Superman," "Supergirl," officially premiered last week. Unfortunately, the film failed to capitalize on "Superman's" market momentum, pulling in a mere $38 million at the North American box office during its opening weekend. This is far from good news for a blockbuster production costing $180 million.

Two years ago, "Joker: Folie à Deux," another DC brand film with a similar production budget of nearly $200 million, opened to a comparable $37.6 million in North America. Its final global box office barely topped $200 million, resulting in a significant loss for Warner Bros. Pictures after factoring in marketing costs and theatrical splits. Given this trajectory, "Supergirl" appears poised to follow a similar path. Internationally, "Supergirl" earned approximately $30 million in its opening week, bringing its global debut to a disappointing $68 million.

However, "Supergirl" wasn't the only franchise to underperform last week. The fifth main installment in the "Jackass" series, "Jackass: Best and Last," also stumbled, earning $8.2 million in North America and $1.9 million internationally, for a global opening of $10.1 million. This marks a significant drop compared to the previous film, which grossed $23 million in North America alone during its opening weekend. The silver lining is that the fifth installment, like its predecessors, maintained a modest budget of around $10 million, meaning it won't require a massive box office haul to turn a profit.

Meanwhile, "Toy Story 5" continued its reign at the North American box office, securing the top spot for its second consecutive week with an additional $70 million. The Pixar sequel added another $159 million from international markets, bringing its global cumulative total to $585 million.
